The Emma Stewart Resource Centre recognizes that the term “Indians,” used in subject headings such as “Indians of North America,” is offensive to many people. Although we currently maintain these headings to adhere to descriptive standards used by libraries worldwide, we and other Saskatchewan libraries are working to replace them with headings that are acceptable to Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Indigenous Peoples have always carried the knowledge necessary to heal. When our people heal, our families heal, our communities heal and our land will heal. You cannot have one without the other. These stories are teachings, prophecy and protocols shared throughout the years by elders, language speakers, medicine people and helpers. They have been the foundation to individual healing and learning self-love. I am Syilx and Secwepemc, and although many of my teachings come from these places, they also intertwine with indigenous knowledge shared through ceremony from many other nations. These teachings not only show us how to love and respect ourselves but they provide protocols and laws on how we are to plan for ourselves, our community and our economy, and they show us how to govern our people through matriarchal and egalitarian teachings. People from all backgrounds have embraced concepts from other parts of the world that promote self-love, healing and well-being through practices of discipline and meditation, yet very little has been shared about indigenous systems and their approach to healing. The stories shared here have taught me how to cultivate safe space for myself and others. It is these teachings that helped me call my spirit back. My story may be rooted in trauma, but it is not my only story.--Publisher.

Distributed by McIntyre Media. “The Lions”, twin peaks towering over Vancouver, have given their name to many BC places and things; but Joe Sa7plek and Mary Lίxwelut Capilano, leaders of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) Nation, knew these peaks as the Two Sisters. Settlers replaced traditional place names across Canada with names from their homelands. These twin peaks reminded John Hamilton Gray of the British lions in London’s Trafalgar Square, and the new name persisted. Settlers displaced the Squamish (“skohomish”) people, and almost obliterated their culture, but the name Capilano (anglicized version of Kia'palano) is found today all over Joe and Mary’s traditional territory. Joe Capilano tirelessly campaigned for native rights in the late 19th century, at the same time as Pauline Johnson, a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) mixed race poet from Southern Ontario, toured with her popular stage performances. She met Joe Capilano in London where he was petitioning King Edward, and when she retired in Vancouver, the Capilanos shared traditional Coast Salish stories with her. Her last book, “The Legends of Vancouver”, recorded the story of “The Two Sisters”: twin sisters brought peace and brotherhood to two warring nations by inviting their enemies to a celebratory potlach, and the Creator preserved their memory on the nearby mountain crest.--Distributor's website.

Exploring the relationship between the role of education and Indigenous survival, Digital Storytelling in Indigenous Education is an ethnographic exploration of how digital storytelling can be part of a broader project of decolonization of individuals, their families, and communities. By recounting how a remote Indigenous (Métis) community were able to collectively imagine, plan and produce numerous unique digital stories representing counter-narratives to the dominant version of Canadian history, Poitras Pratt provides frameworks, approaches and strategies for the use of digital media and arts for the purpose of cultural memory, community empowerment, and mobilization. The volume provides a valuable example of how a community-based educational project can create and restore intergenerational exchanges through modern media, and covers topics such as: Introducing the Métis and their community; decolonizing education through a Métis approach to research; the ethnographic journey; and translating the work of decolonizing to education. Digital Storytelling in Indigenous Education is the perfect resource for researchers, academics, and postgraduate students in the fields of Indigenous education, comparative education, and technology education, or those looking to explore the role of modern media in facilitating healing and decolonization in a marginalized community.--Ministry of Education website.

To the Gitxsan of Northwestern British Columbia, Nox Ga'naaw is a storyteller, speaking truths of the universe. When Nox Ga'naaw, the frog mother, releases her eggs among the aquatic plants of a pond, the tiny tadpoles are left to fend for themselves. As they hatch, grow legs, and transform into their adult selves, they must avoid the mouths of hungry predators. Will the young frogs survive to lay their own eggs, continuing a cycle 200 million years in the making? In book four of the Mothers of Xsan series, young readers learn about the life cycle of the Columbia Spotted Frog, the special significance of this species to the Gitxsan, and how Nox Ga'naaw and her offspring are essential to the balance that is life.--Publisher.

Stories are medicine. During a time of heightened isolation, this bestselling author shares what he knows about the power of storytelling—and offers some of his own favourite stories from Elders, friends, and family. Gathering around a campfire, or the dinner table, we humans have always told stories. Through them, we define our identities and shape our understanding of the world. Master storyteller and bestselling author Richard Van Camp writes of the power of storytelling and its potential to transform speakers and audiences alike. In Gather, Van Camp shares what elements make a compelling story and offers insights into basic storytelling techniques, such as how to read a room—even on Zoom—and how to capture the attention of listeners. And he delves further into the impact storytelling can have, helping readers understand how to create community and how to banish loneliness through their tales. A member of the Tlicho Dene First Nation, Van Camp also includes stories from Elders whose wisdom influenced him. During a time of uncertainty and disconnection, stories reach across vast distances to offer connection. Gather is a joyful reminder of this for storytellers: all of us.--Publisher.

In this Inuit tale, the actions of a hare and a fox change the Arctic forever by creating day and night. In very early times, there was no night or day and words spoken by chance could become real. When a hare and a fox meet and express their longing for light and darkness, their words are too powerful to be denied. Passed orally from storyteller to storyteller for hundreds of years, this beautifully illustrated story weaves together elements of an origin story and a traditional animal tale, giving young readers a window into Inuit mythology.--Publisher.

Alternate title: Walking along. In Walking Along Paul Goble has pulled together six of his best Iktomi stories and compiled them into a compendium of trouble, disaster, fun, and examples from which to learn. Iktomi is the Lakota name for the American Indian Trickster who appears in the stories of peoples all over the North American continent. He is famous for getting into mischief, causing trouble, and never learning the lessons handed out to him. These timeless stories and Goble's dramatic illustrations combine to snare readers in Iktomi's waiting net and lead them on a journey of adventure with the troublesome trickster. Albert White Hat, Sr., has contributed a Foreword in which he explains the history of Iktomi and the American Indian tradition of oral history.--Publisher.

This is the story of a determined Ojibwe Grandmother (Nokomis) Josephine Mandamin and her great love for Nibi (Water). Nokomis walks to raise awareness of our need to protect Nibi for future generations, and for all life on the planet. She, along with other women, men, and youth, have walked around all of the Great Lakes from the four salt waters - or oceans - all the way to Lake Superior. The water walks are full of challenges, and by her example Josephine inspires and challenges us all to take up our responsibility to protect our water and our planet for all generations.--Publisher.

English language arts 30. This resource contains traditional and contemporary oral stories collected from Dene people in several northern communities. An introduction from the author describes the changes to the North. These changes have reinforced for him the need for storytelling to provide an understanding of the spiritual beliefs, cultural values, and history of the people.
