Raised during the fourth century C.E. in Alexandria, Egypt, Hypatia became an authority in mathematics. Hypatia's father, Theon, believed that she should be educated the same as a boy. Theon was a professor at the university and taught Hypatia all that he knew. Hypatia became fascinated with numbers after watching Theon write number sentences.
