Readicide is defined as the systematic killing of the love of reading. Gallagher argues that schools are actively (though unknowingly) furthering the decline of reading. He contends that instructional practices used in most schools are killing reading by: valuing the development of test-takers over the development of lifelong learners, requiring students to read difficult texts without proper instructional supports and scaffolds, insisting that students focus on academic texts and ignoring the importance of developing recreational reading.--Ministry of Education website.
