Anna and Ivan escape poverty and hardship in Ukraine and immigrate to Canada to start a new life. As they start to build their homestead, World War I breaks out. Ivan volunteers to fight for his new homeland. When Ivan tries to enlist, he is declared an enemy and is arrested. Anna returns to her home and plants crops. Over the years, Anna is unable to clear land and is threatened with eviction from her homestead. After years in an interment camp, Ivan returns home after escaping.
