When soldiers arrive in Arn's Cambodian hometown in the 1970s, he is separated from his family and sent to a labour camp. He learns to play an instrument to appease the demands of the soldiers and finds a way to survive in the camp. As the country is about to be liberated from the Khmer Rouge, Arn is forced to become a child soldier.
