When 17-year-old Alex is involved in a car accident that takes her best friend's life, she feels her life is over. Alex blames herself for the accident, no longer has a love for singing, which she shared with her friend, and refuses to even speak. A judge orders Alex to complete community service at a hospital where she meets Joanie, a girl who is trapped in a body that won't let her speak.
