Set in 1941, 16-year-old Marie-Claire Côté contracts tuberculosis. Along with her siblings, Josée and Luc, they are sent to the sanitorium to "chase the cure." Luc is unable to fight the disease and dies. Marie-Claire is devastated and feels abandoned by her parents who feel having a son is more important than raising a girl. At the sanitorium, Sevigny befriends Marie-Claire and begins to recover. Marie-Clarie is moved to the cottages where she gains more strength and is eventually released. Sevigny's condition declines, and Marie-Claire must decide what matters the most - her love for her friend or facing a new world without being sick.
