According to family tradition, four-year-old Baba Wagué is sent to Kassaro, in Mali, West Africa, to be raised by his paternal grandparents. Grandma Sabou teaches Baba about his history and traditions. Baba learns to race crabs, catch catfish with his bare hands and to love the village community. Finally, Grandma Sabou decides that Baba is educated enough and can return to his family. In the city, Baba's family struggles to provide him with a formal education. Baba shares his village stories and in the process, discovers his artistic talents and storytelling abilities. .
