In June, 1959, 12-year-old Lynne Harper is found raped and strangled in an Ontario woodlot. A few months later, her classmate, 14-year-old Steven Truscott is convicted of her murder and sentenced to death by hanging. A young woman named Sarah guides the audience through the play. She moves effortlessly from the past to the present to tell the story. Through Sarah, the audience understands how a community became fearful and how a young man was found guilty due to rumour and innuendo. His case served as the impetus for the abolishment of capital punishment in Canada. In 1960, his death sentence was commuted to life in prison. In 2007, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled that Truscotts conviction was a miscarriage of justice, and he was acquitted of the crime.
