In 1942, nine-year-old Bruno returns home from school to find his possessions are being crated. His father has received a promotion and they must leave their Berlin home and move to a desolate area that Bruno calls Out-with. At Out-with, Bruno has nothing to do and no friends. One day while exploring, Bruno comes across a fence and a boy, Shmuel, who lives on the other side of the fence. Bruno befriends Shmuel and notices that he wears a uniform of striped pajamas like the other people who live within the fence. The friendship deepens between the two boys. One day, Bruno tells Shmuel that his family is returning to Berlin. Shmuel is saddened by the news. Bruno devises a plan to have a final great adventure with Shmuel. Donning a pair of striped pajamas, Bruno crawls under the fence for a final meeting that has devastating consequences.
